The sensory guide

A guide to the room, before your first visit

Read it with your child if that helps. Nothing in the room is fixed: if something is too much, tell us and we change it.

  • Look

Warm lamps and daylight through sheer curtains. We can dim any of it, or turn it off.

  • Listen

Rugs and curtains soften the echo. We can close the door, switch off the fan or keep it open.

  • Touch

Fidgets, cushions and a weighted lap pad are in the basket. Nothing has to be touched.

A session in order

From the car to the door and back

So no step is a surprise.

  1. Step 1: Before you come

We send this guide and a short note you can read together. Tell us anything your child needs to know first.

  2. Step 2: At the door

Arrive when you are ready; there is a quiet corner if you need a few minutes. Your clinician says hello at your child's speed.

  3. Step 3: In the room

Your clinician names what will happen and when it will end. The end time is the same every visit.

  4. Step 4: When it is time to go

We give a few minutes' warning, then a goodbye that is the same each time. A parent gets a short word after.

Ask us

Things you can ask us to change

You never need to explain why.

  • Dim or switch off a light

  • Turn the fan or the white noise off

  • Keep the door open

  • Stand, walk or sit on the floor

  • Keep shoes, a hat or headphones on

  • Bring your own comfort item

  • Take a break and come back

  • Switch to video with the camera off

Tell us what helps your child.

The more you tell us before the first visit, the less your child has to explain.
